CORNELIUS GURLITT

10th February 1820 --- 17th June 1901

Cornelius Gurlitt was born in Altona, Germany in 1820, Gurlitt went to School with classmate Carl Reinecke who became a famous pianist and composer,
it was probably from here were his interest in music developed. Gurlitt went to study music under Reinecke's father for a number of years.

Gurlitt made his  first public appearance around 1837,  after which he  decided to continue his  studies in Denmark at Copenhagen, were he extended his
knowledge of  composition for the  piano and organ under Curlander.   It was here in Copenhagen that he met and became  good friends with the Danish
composer Niels Wilhelm Gade,  (you will find some  pieces of his on my website),  Gurlitt kept in contact and remained friends with   until Gade's death in
1890.

Later Gurlitt moved to Leipzig, Germany, when the war broke out in 1848,  Gurlitt became a military band master, after the war Gurlitt traveled to Rome,
it was here that his playing and compositions was noticed and recognized and the papal Accademia di Santa Cecilia nominated him an honorary member,
Gurlitt became a Professor of Music in 1855.

Gurlitt composed a vast amounts, which ranged from piano works, songs,  teaching exercise's for piano etc, as well as symphonies, opera's and cantatas
etc. Gurlitt died in 1901 in his home town of Altona.
