PETER WARLOCK

30th October 1894 --- 17th December 1930

Warlock was born Philip Arnold Heseltine in 1894 in London and was thought to changed his name to Peter Warlock because it was alledged
that he had a  interest in occult practices,  he would only use  this name when he  published his musical works.  He was a composer of songs
and other vocal works, and had a deep interest in folk song's and Elizabethan music.

He attend Eton College, it was here that he met the British composer Frederick Delius, whom he formed a close friendship over the following
years. He was very unhappy with his schooldays at Eton never able to fit in to the Victorian attitudes and bullying. Warlock produced one his
first serious composition's in around 1915.

Warlock then seem to lose some interest  in composering until  his meeting in 1916 with a  Dutch composer Bernard van Dieren,  he went to
Ireland  for  a year  to study Celtic  culture  and language,  which was  a inspiration  on his  composing songs  in a distinctive,  original style.
Warlock then return  to England in 1918, were he built a  reputation as a combative and controversial music critic.  He produced most of his
composition's in the 1920's, first in Wales and later at in Kent.

Warlock would published any written works under his own name of "Heseltine", and was well known for his contribution to the scholarship
of early music. Warlock also wrote  a biography of his friend Frederick Delius,  as well as other works. Unfortunately near  to the end of his
life,  Warlock had became depressed by a  loss of his creative abilities.  He died in London  of coal gas poisoning in 1930,  most probably by
his own hand.
